The Five Sorrowful Mysteries

#1 • Luke 22:42

First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Beneath the olive trees of Gethsemane, Jesus embraces the sorrow of human sin and surrenders wholly to the Father’s redeeming will.

✦ Spiritual Fruit & Grace Sought: Grace of sincere contrition and peaceful surrender to God’s will.

#2 • Isaiah 53:5

Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar

“He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

Christ endures bitter scourging in silent patience, offering His innocent suffering for the healing of our wounded humanity.

✦ Spiritual Fruit & Grace Sought: Grace of purity, self-mastery, and healing of body and soul.

#3 • Matthew 27:29

Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns

“Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand.” (Matthew 27:29)

The King of Peace accepts mockery and a sharp crown of thorns to heal human pride, vanity, and hardness of heart.

✦ Spiritual Fruit & Grace Sought: Grace of moral courage and freedom from pride.

#4 • Luke 9:23

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

Though exhausted along the Via Dolorosa, Jesus rises again and carries the heavy wood of the Cross out of steadfast love.

✦ Spiritual Fruit & Grace Sought: Grace of patience and perseverance in daily trials.

#5 • Luke 23:46

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery: The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

“Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit; and when he had said this he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:46)

Upon Calvary, Jesus forgives those who crucify Him, entrusts His Mother to us, and gives His life for the salvation of the world.

✦ Spiritual Fruit & Grace Sought: Grace of forgiving love and self-giving devotion.
