The Shepherd’s Harp Under Bethlehem’s Stars
Forgotten out in the pasture while his tall older brothers stand before the prophet Samuel, young David learns how God sees.
High on the grassy hills outside Bethlehem, night arrived like a soft dark-blue blanket stitched with silver stars. While his seven tall brothers slept indoors, young David sat beside a crackling shepherd’s fire, counting every lamb until even the smallest limping one curled safely near his sandals.
Whenever the night wind rustled through the olive branches and made the flock restless, David lifted his small wooden harp. As his fingers plucked gentle melodies into the cool air, he sang to the Maker of heaven and earth: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.”
One afternoon the aged prophet Samuel visited Bethlehem to anoint a future king chosen by God. Jesse proudly presented his tallest, strongest sons one by one, sure that a leader must look fierce and towering. Yet God whispered quietly to Samuel that none of them was the chosen one—and nobody had even thought to call little David in from the sheepfold.
When David finally arrived, cheeks rosy from the hillside breeze and smelling of meadow grass, Samuel poured fragrant olive oil upon his head. For God taught Samuel a secret every child can treasure forever: human eyes admire height and armor, but the Lord looks straight at the kindness and courage inside the heart.
“For the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”— 1 Samuel 16:7
