The Elevator of Grace Behind Cloister Walls

Comparing herself to a grain of sand beside the towering saints of history, young Sister Thérèse searches Scripture for a path made for little souls.

Type Size:

Winter mornings inside the Carmelite monastery of Lisieux were unheated and austere. Stone corridors echoed only with soft sandals and the chant of the Divine Office. When fifteen-year-old Thérèse Martin entered those doors in 1888, nobody outside her family imagined that this quiet girl from Normandy would one day speak to millions across every continent.

Reading the lives of the great saints of the past, Thérèse felt an honest ache. She saw herself not as a soaring eagle or a mighty cedar tree, but as a tiny bird with weak wings. Yet God had placed an immense longing for holiness inside her heart, and she knew that God could not inspire desires that were impossible to fulfill.

In the late nineteenth century, wealthy townhouses in Paris had begun installing a modern invention called the elevator. Opening her Bible one evening by lamplight, Thérèse’s eyes fell upon Proverbs 9:4—“Whoever is a little one, let him come to me”—and Isaiah 66:13, where the Lord promises to carry His children in His arms. Her face lit up with serene joy.

“The elevator which must raise me to heaven,” she wrote in her notebook, “is Your arms, O Jesus! And for this I had no need to grow up, on the contrary I had to remain little and become this more and more.” Holiness was no longer reserved for extraordinary feats; it belonged to trusting surrender.

✦ Scripture Anchor & Quiet Reflection
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 18:3
Question for the Heart: Do we postpone loving God while waiting for grand achievements, overlooking the quiet trust He asks of us right where we stand today?
