The Second Charcoal Fire on the Shore of Tiberias

After an empty night of fishing on the Sea of Galilee, the Risen Lord recreates the exact scent of charcoal smoke—not to shame Peter, but to restore him three times.

Type Size:

Back on the familiar waters of the Sea of Tiberias, seven disciples labored all night with their nets and caught nothing. When pale morning mist lifted off the water, Someone stood quietly upon the pebbled beach, calling them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. Instantly the mesh strained with one hundred and fifty-three large fish, and John whispered the words that made Peter leap straight into the sea: “It is the Lord!”

Dripping and breathless, Simon waded ashore—and stopped still as a familiar scent reached him on the dawn breeze. There on the stones burned a charcoal fire, an anthrakia, with fish laid upon the embers and fresh bread ready beside it. The Risen Christ had deliberately recreated the sensory memory of Peter’s darkest night, transforming the place of betrayal into a table of hospitality.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus did not lecture Simon about his failure in Jerusalem. Instead, beside the quiet lapping of Galilee’s waves, He asked three gentle questions to heal three denials: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Three times Peter answered, dropping all boastful comparisons with others, placing his whole heart upon the omniscience of his Friend: “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”

With each confession of love, the Good Shepherd entrusted His flock anew—“Feed my lambs... Tend my sheep... Feed my sheep”—and spoke the simple invitation that had begun it all years before: “Follow me.” By a second charcoal fire, grace proved deeper than human failure.

✦ Scripture Anchor & Quiet Reflection
“He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” ... Peter said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.””
— John 21:17
Question for the Heart: What painful memory in your own life is Christ inviting you to bring beside His fire of mercy today, answering simply: “Lord, You know that I love You”?
